What is homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a medical science based in the principles of similarity, that is; a substance which causes a symptom in a healthy person will cure a sick patient suffering from the same symptom.
What is a homeopathic remedy?
Homeopathic remedies were first tested in healthy people back in the 1800´s by a physician named Samuel Hahnemann. After collecting the symptoms they caused in the healthy, their curative efficacy was proved among the sickened. In most cases these remedies were taken from the plant, animal or mineral kingdom, most of them had been used traditionally in conventional medicine, some information was gathered from reported toxicological cases. Nowadays you may also find homeopathic remedies made out of substances extracted from many other sources for example from, chemicals, conventional drugs, disease itself, etc.
Veterinary Homeopathy
Please see this video, it is an interview to Dr Pitcairn DVM PhD, the most eminent contemporary Veterinary Homeopath in the world.
WHAT DOES A HOMEOPATH LOOKS FOR?
A Classical Homeopath bases his prescription according to:
-
The totality of the symptoms of the patient, including his particularities, personality traits, predispositions, family history, medical history...;
-
The sickness that affects the patient and how it affects the patient, physically, emotionally and mentally;
-
How this ailment behaves in this particular patient and how the patient behaves under this particular ailment.
That is the main difference between a homeopath and a conventional healer, the homeopath will take into consideration the patient as a whole, using the mental, emotional and physical symptoms, and will seek to understand how it affects him compared to when he was healthy, whilst the conventional approach tends to focus exclusively on the main physical ailment without considering many of the peculiarities of the patient or the illness.
WHAT CAN HOMEOPATHY DO FOR YOUR PET?
Homeopathy can:
-
Cure or treat every diseases pets can get gently, in a harmless way, free of side effects and toxicity;
-
Treat and sometimes cure chronic diseases that seemed untreatable and uncurable to conventional therapy;
-
Deal with the transition to the after life in a harmless way giving the patient a dignifying palliative treatment when suffering of terminal illness.
The following case examples can be seen by clicking the icon on the right named "Cases" that will direct you to my blog or else clicking directly over the phrase of each case:
-
Borra Tintas - refractory epilepsy that will not cure with conventional medication
-
Dennis - a homeopathic cure of tetraparesia symptoms untreatable by conventional approach
-
Thai - an autoimmune condition cured with homeopathy
-
Bell - how homoepathy deals with a fatal terminal chronic diseases
VACCINOSIS AND VACCINATION GUIDELINES
Vaccinosis
Vaccinosis is a term used by homeopaths to refer to a disease syndrome caused by a weakness that is precipitated by vaccination. It can be an anaphylactic reaction (immediate allergic reaction) or a long term reaction, like an allergic condition (like skin deramtitis, otitis, etc.), an autoimmune disease, a degenerative disease, even death or just a simple conduct change.
We need to be aware that vaccines are not as safe as we thought they were and we need to control better these reaction and even avoid them if possible. We all recognize that Vaccinosis has become a bigger concern over the years, due to many reasons. Part of the reason for the overgrowth of chronic illness, degenerative diseases and allergies lays in overvaccination. For information about this subject on human medicine follow this link:
Therefore for every vaccine you need to seek for the information by asking the right questions amongst the specialists in the area and never, due to a conflict of interest, should you just rely on the information given to you by people who sell these vaccines, instead you may take this information into consideration but seek for the independent opinions to build up your own decisions and therefore you will grab control of the health of your beloved with all the responsability this entitles you with.
In veterinary medicine and in this particular area I would strongly suggest you see/hear what Dr Ronald Schulltz has to say, he is the most eminent person on the area, he is a veterinarian with a Phd, professor at the University of Winsconsin and one of the author of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association vaccination guidelines.
You may find an excelent interview on youtube at the bottom of this post or just follow this link.
If you wish to hear only what he has to say on:
- Duration of immunity go to minute 17:46
- Antigens go to minute 29:30
- Vaccinosis go to minute 33:40
- Rabies vaccines go to minute 38:30
- What protocol he uses in his pets go to minute 46:57
Pet vaccination guidelines
The World Small Animal Veterinary Association has published its vaccination guidelines. The first two basic principles of these guidelines are:
-
We should aim to vaccinate every animal with core vaccines, and to vaccinate each individual less frequently by only giving non-core vaccines that are necessary for that animal;
-
Vaccines should not be given needlessly. Core vaccines are those that are required by every dog in order to protect them from life-threatening infectious diseases that remain prevalent throughout the world. Core vaccines should not be given any more frequently than every three years after the 12 month booster injection following the puppy/kitten series, because the duration of immunity (DOI) is known to be many years and may be up to the lifetime of the pet.
Is my pet immunized?
How safe is your pet at any moment?
We have the technology to partially answer that question for the three main diseases you should be concerned about (Distemper, Parvovirus and Hepatitis) and, specifically according to every single dog by the means of a blood tets. There is a test available to be done in the consult and takes less than an hour to give you the antibody titers of your pet against these diseases. This test will just asses the antibody titer, that does not mean he is completely safe (just as no vaccine can ever claim that either), it will just tell us he needs no repetition of the vaccine against that particular disease(s). It is called Vaccicheck and you can follow this link for more info on this product.
What to do?
-
In my opinion you should at least follow the guidelines of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association... no longer vaccinate your pets against core vaccine at a yearly basis;
-
For Parvovirus, Distemper Virus and Adenovirus you should check for their antibody titers after primo-vaccination (puppy shots) to be certain of the immune state of your pet and if they prove to have immunity repeat these tests as frequent as needed to decide according to these results wether to vaccinate them or not;
-
In the case of the Rabies you should vaccinate with a three year vaccine, according to the manufacturer duration of immunity;
-
Other non core vaccines... you should seek for educated information for each and every vaccine and with this information and the help of your vet take a decision on what strategy you shall use in order to prevent this specific disease;
-
In case your pet does a reaction to a Non Core Vaccine be extra careful, probably it is not a good idea to revaccinate your pet with that vaccine, therefore change the strategy or at least change the vaccine manufacturer hoping the reaction was to the excipient of the former vaccine.
RABIES VACCINATION IN PORTUGAL
This a specific vaccine which needs a special atention due to its legal issues. The Portuguese Rabies vaccine policy has recently (June 2013) changed: According to point 3 d) of the "Aviso n.º 7957/2013" published on "Diário da República, 2.ª série — N.º 118 — 21 de junho de 2013", vets are now entitled to recommend intervals for this specific vaccine according to the duration of immunity of the producer (you may find the link to this publication here).
Which Rabies Vaccines to use?
According to the "NOTA EXPLICATIVA" from the Direção Geral de Alimentação e Veterinária (see the picture), there are only two Rabies vaccine authorized in the country that have the duration of immunity of three years, these are Nobivac Rabies from Intervet laboratories and Rabdomun from Pfizer laboratories. Also according to this note any animal vaccinated in 2010 with these two vaccines only need to be vaccinated in 2013, so the actual law is retrospectively valid.
Any other brand of the Rabies vaccine is only valid for a year.
AT WHAT AGE SHOULD MY DOG BE VACCINATED?
According to the law any dog three months or older must be vaccinated against rabies and should also be microchiped at the same time.
